The Arts and Culture Commission supports the City's goals related to leveraging arts and cultural resources in support of the City's strategic goals. MN cities are in competition to build and expand their economies. Excellence in education, arts, and culture is a means for attracting the interest of prospective business ventures. The Gateway project, along with related infrastructure projects, has the potential to represent to residents and visitors the City's character and commitment to the arts. Many cities already are making 1% investments in the arts, and other cities are considering this strategy. Resolution 051 is an excellent opportunity for the City to support and evaluate this kind of investment. ACC endorses the project, which presents an opportunity that the City should not ignore.

As a city resident and Chair of the Arts & Culture Commission, I support the entirety of Resolution 2018-051 and urge you to vote yes to all three items included in the resolution: 5th street, monument digital sign and landscaping, and public art. These improvements align with several city planning documents, including the City's Comprehensive Plan, the City's Strategic, the 2012 Gateway Corridor Improvement Plan, and the City's Parks Plan, as well as the Roundtable's 2017 Framework plan and ArtsPlan06.

By passing the resolution and including all three items, the City will not only move all of these plans forward but continue to reinforce the unique sense of place that residents and visitors feel when they are in Northfield.
