A new arena is a great opportunity for growth in Northfield, not only for those who enjoy skating but for the whole community. The ability to host more tournaments will bring revenue to Northfield area businesses. There would be potential to host dry land sports and more events such as the book fair, craft fairs, etc. It will also allow for expansion of the hockey program and the skating school and the possibility to rent ice time to surrounding communities. The land was generously donated by the Gleason family, lets get this done and do it right.
The arena has more to offer the Northfield community than just a place to skate. The arena is a revenue generator in that it brings in hundreds of people for each tournament, who stay, eat, shop, and play here in town. Currently our tournament hosting capacity is severely limited, but a new arena would increase that capacity by 2-4 times the number of tournaments, add twice as many teams, and we wouldn't need to send teams to Faribault to play some of their games and spend their money. Visiting teams provide photos taken in front of the Historical Society, in Bridge Square, at the Falls, etc. Those teams are spending money in Northfield, generating funds during the slow winter season for all of the Northfield community! And come spring, the facility could easily be used as indoor space for tennis, basketball, lacrosse, and more, and it's proximity to the bike trail would make it a perfect space to accommodate a well-equipped trailhead, again making it a space for out of town visitors.
