2. 26-158 Public Hearing on the Conditional Use Permit for Carleton College to make specified transportation facility improvements north of 1st St. E. within the Perimeter Transition Area.
We’ve lived on the NE corner of Winona and Second streets for decades, and are a Carleton family. Now the college wants to install a massive, busy transit station that will run constant traffic - shuttles, buses, coaches, service vehicles, more cars - along the residential blocks and intersections that already face safety challenges for walkers and bikers.
School kids head to and from bus stops here. Neighbors walk dogs. Retirees meet to stroll. Students, staff, and visitors travel between campus and town for classes and events. Residents work in front gardens. Bikers pedal through using new, inviting paths. These are safe “people-centered” historical blocks.
A transit center in this location would change all of this: more exhaust, noise, and light from passing, idling, stopped vehicles, and more injury risks at intersections, walks, paths - all in contradiction to the City’s Comprehensive Plan for safe neighborhoods. We request that the commission deny this inappropriate CUP.
